- Abstract
- In the works of A.K. Matveev, based on the results of forty years of field research, an arbitrary analysis of the substratum toponymy of the Russian North (PC) - Vologda and Arkhangelsk regions was performed. Areal analysis, coupled with an etymological analysis of differentiating toponyms and topoformants, showed that the main ancient ethno-linguistic opposition to the PC is the confrontation between the Sami and the Northern Finns of the Chudi Russian chronicles and legends. Later, this ancient toponymy was superimposed on the Baltic-Finnish (pro-Fin.) - Karelian and Vepsian layer. At the same time, the data of both toponymy and borrowed vocabulary show that the linguistic picture of PC was mosaic. As a result, the Russians in different regions of the PC had direct contacts both with the Baltic Finns and the Finno-Ugric Chudyu, and with different dialect groups of the Sami.
