Abstract

Canada's operation in Afghanistan unfolded during the most important domestic political event – the federal elections-2021. The election campaign "pulled" the main attention and resources of the Canadian leadership, limiting its ability to act in Afghanistan.

Despite the difficulties, the Liberal Government of Justin Trudeau has managed a lot. Firstly, the evacuation of Canadians and Afghans who cooperated with the Canadian Armed Forces during the years of the US and NATO military mission was organized. Secondly, Ottawa has defined its attitude towards the Taliban regime by refusing their diplomatic recognition. Thirdly, the admission of Afghan refugees to Canada has begun. In each of these areas, the liberal government had achievements and failures that caused acute controversy in the country.
